Find a Cofounder in the UK (2026): 8 Best Places, From London to Belfast
Almost two in three UK tech companies are outside London, yet most cofounder advice stops at the M25. Eight places that work across the UK in 2026, city by city.
TL;DR: The best places to find a cofounder in the UK in 2026 are Foundinity (online, anywhere in the UK), YC Co-Founder Matching, Entrepreneur First and Antler in London, university enterprise centres, regional programmes such as SETsquared, Techscaler and Catalyst Co-builders, and recurring founder events. If you're happy to spend evenings scrolling profiles that aren't close to what you need, a big directory will do; if not, start with Foundinity, which matches you on how you work and puts a 10-day clock on every match. Outside London, pair it with your nearest programme or event.

Most of the UK is outside London. The cofounder routes aren't.
London is still the biggest single pool: 136,000 of the 402,000 UK companies incorporated in the first half of 2026 (Beauhurst), and the only UK city in YC Co-Founder Matching's top-ten list (2,900 active profiles).
But most tech companies are elsewhere. Beauhurst counts more than 83,000 active UK tech companies, and around 54,000 of them are outside London (Beauhurst). Cambridge has the third-highest enterprise value per million inhabitants of any hub in the world (Dealroom).
Yet the two best-known team-formation programmes, Entrepreneur First and Antler, run in London, and some well-known regional routes have closed. If you live in Leeds, Cardiff or Aberdeen, you need a plan that doesn't assume you'll move. Here are the eight places, starting with the one that works anywhere.
1. Foundinity (online, works anywhere in the UK)
Foundinity is the place to start if you want to meet people who fit how you work, wherever they live. You state your preferences, then a deeper assessment captures your working style, ambition, commitment, vision and values. A multi-trait algorithm "built on established psychological compatibility models" ranks the result, so you see compatible people instead of hundreds of random profiles.
- What you get: a compatibility breakdown on every match, showing where you align and where you differ. That's the agenda for your first call.
- A 10-day clock: every match has one, so conversations don't stall. You book the intro call inside the app.
- Private: your profile isn't public; only compatible members see it, and an "exploring" status lets you look while you're still employed.
- Cost: free to get started (5 likes a week, up to 3 active matches). Plus is $5 a week or $15 a month: 15 likes a week, unlimited active matches, see everyone who liked you, and the full compatibility score and breakdown.
- Where: it's online, so it works the same in Glasgow, Swansea or Norwich as in London.
2. YC Co-Founder Matching (a large free directory)
YC Co-Founder Matching is a free directory with 2,900 active London profiles, but you do the work: you read profiles, invite people and sort the results yourself.
- What it is: Y Combinator's online profile directory, open to founders anywhere; a match happens when someone accepts your invite.
- Cost: free, by YC's own description.
- Best for: London founders who want volume.
- Watch out for: London (2,900 profiles) is the only UK city in YC's top-ten list, so in most other cities you'll be looking at remote candidates. YC's in-person matching meetups run only in San Francisco and New York.
3. Entrepreneur First (London)
Entrepreneur First is a London programme built for people who don't have a cofounder yet. It says it turns "exceptional individuals into funded founders".
- What it is: a selective, full-time programme with a matching process and a pool of pre-screened cofounders. Offices in central London, Bangalore and San Francisco.
- Cost: free to apply; EF gives a grant while you explore ideas.
- Best for: people who can leave their job and move fast.
- Watch out for: its eligibility includes "the ambition to build a company in the U.S.", and no cohort dates were posted when we checked.
4. Antler UK (London)
Antler UK runs an eight-week, full-time residency at its London offices where solo founders try to form a team.
- What it is: a residency; complete teams can join for six weeks, solo founders and incomplete teams for up to eight.
- Best for: solo founders who are ready to choose a cofounder within weeks.
- Watch out for: You're expected to leave with a team, not on your own. You need the right to work in the UK, or a visa application under way, by your first interview. Antler says fewer than 1% get in (its own figure). The last listed residency started in September 2026, with no 2027 date posted when we checked.
5. University enterprise centres (if you're eligible)
If you're a student or recent graduate, your university is often the best in-person route, because you meet people building their first company alongside you.
- Imperial Enterprise Lab (London): free for students, staff and alumni; its monthly Community Collider social is open "from undergrad to alumni", no idea needed.
- Masood Entrepreneurship Centre (Manchester): for "all students, recent graduates and early-career researchers", with a three-day Launchpad and the Manchester Venture Builder.
- Edinburgh Innovations: free advice for University of Edinburgh graduates within two years of graduating.
- Accelerate Cambridge: needs a team of two or more, with one founder who has a Cambridge connection (which includes living in the town).
- Watch out for: most are closed to outsiders, and none we checked runs cofounder matching.
6. Regional programmes outside London
Three programmes give founders outside London a home base, and one has a record of forming teams.
- Catalyst Co-builders (Northern Ireland): the successor to Catalyst's Co-Founders programme, which had 976 participants and formed 263 teams over eight years. Co-builders is self-paced, modular and "open to anyone over the age of 18"; its page doesn't say whether it still forms teams, and no cohort dates are posted.
- Techscaler (Scotland): a Scottish Government programme delivered by CodeBase, with hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling, Inverness and the South of Scotland. Joining is free; it offers a founder community and a 10-week accelerator, not cofounder matching.
- SETsquared (South of England and Wales): an incubator partnership of six universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey). It says it has incubated more than 5,000 companies. Eligibility depends on the centre.
7. Founder events and tech weeks
One evening rarely produces a cofounder. Returning to the same event each month, where the same people come back, gives you time to see how someone thinks.
- Startup Grind London: 18,276 members; next event an AI Demo Night on 5 November 2026.
- Startup Grind Edinburgh: 4,559 members; monthly hybrid fireside chats, working with the Glasgow and Aberdeen chapters.
- Founders Coffee Club Manchester: a founders-only morning on the last Thursday of each month (£17.50 including a coworking pass).
- City tech weeks: London Tech Week runs 7-11 June 2027 at Olympia; Birmingham Tech Week ran 35+ events from 19-23 October 2026.
- Watch out for: most attendees aren't looking for a cofounder. Pick one recurring event and go every time.
8. Reddit UK threads
UK founders post cofounder searches on Reddit; an r/startups thread, "Where/how to find a technical cofounder (UK/London)", is on Google's first page for this search.
- Where: r/ukstartups has cofounder posts such as "London UK - looking for a cofounder!" (September 2026); r/startups has UK and London threads.
- Cost: free.
- Watch out for: nobody checks who's behind a post. Describe the problem you're solving and what you've done so far, not just "looking for a CTO".

Finding a cofounder outside London
Manchester. The Masood Entrepreneurship Centre supports University of Manchester students and recent graduates, and Founders Coffee Club meets monthly at Clockwise Linley House. YC doesn't list Manchester among its top cities, so use online matching as your main pool and local events to meet people in person.
Cambridge. The density is unusual: Dealroom ranks it third in the world for enterprise value per million inhabitants. But Cambridge's own cofounder-matching programme, Venture Creation, which aimed at "matching great ideas with exciting talent", is "no longer running", and Accelerate Cambridge only takes teams of two or more. Find your cofounder first, then apply (the next deadline is 15 January 2027).
Oxford. Many guides still point to the Oxford Foundry, but it closed its doors to students in 2022, with many of its support schemes merged into Saïd Business School (UKTN). If you're not at the university, look online and to London.
Edinburgh and Glasgow. Scotland led regional growth in new incorporations in the first half of 2026, up 3.73% on the previous half-year (Beauhurst). Techscaler gives you a free community with hubs in both cities, Startup Grind runs Scottish chapters, and Edinburgh Innovations helps recent University of Edinburgh graduates.
Bristol, the South West and Wales. SETsquared is the main network. Its Bristol centre leaves Engine Shed, which closes in December 2026, for the University of Bristol's Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus; SETsquared says its "programmes, support and community will continue without interruption". Cardiff is part of the same partnership.
Birmingham. Birmingham Tech Week ran more than 35 events from 19 to 23 October 2026 at the ICC, The Studio, Birmingham Rep and Eastside Rooms. Follow up with the people you meet within a week.
Belfast and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland had a programme built around forming teams: Catalyst's Co-Founders formed 263 teams over eight years. Its successor, Co-builders, is open to anyone over 18; check with Catalyst how much team-building it still includes.
If your best candidate lives in another city, that's normal. Our guide to working with a remote cofounder covers how to make it work.
Is your cofounder not British? What the visa rules mean
If your cofounder needs a visa, raise it on the first or second call: it changes timing more than anything else.
- Innovator Founder visa: for starting a new, innovative business; "you cannot join a business that is already trading". An approved body must endorse the idea. Only UK Endorsing Services, Innovator International and Envestors Limited take new applicants, plus the invite-only Global Entrepreneurs Programme (list updated 7 August 2026). It lasts three years and costs £1,357 from outside the UK, plus £1,000 for the endorsement, £500 for each check-in at 12 and 24 months, and the healthcare surcharge (GOV.UK).
- Global Talent (digital technology): for leaders or potential leaders in digital technology, endorsed by Tech Nation. It costs £766 and needs no job offer (GOV.UK).
Rules change; check GOV.UK and consider an immigration adviser before you commit.
