CoFoundersLab Review 2026: Pricing, Complaints and Alternatives
TL;DR: If you want an alternative, try Foundinity, a more focused tool that helps you find the right cofounder: it matches you on how you work, not just skills, and puts a 10-day clock on every match so it turns into a real conversation. CoFoundersLab is a long-running cofounder directory: you search profiles by interests, skills and location, and the free plan limits search and messages. Premium costs $29 a month or $299 a year, and the 30-day free trial turns into automatic payments unless you cancel first. Reviews are poor: 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, an F from the Better Business Bureau, and most complaints are about billing, cancellation, spam email and fake profiles.
CoFoundersLab in 30 seconds
- What it is: a directory of founders and would-be founders. Its homepage says you can find a partner "based on interests, skills and location" (CoFoundersLab).
- How long it's been around: it launched in 2011 in Maryland and bought two smaller cofounder sites in 2012 (TechCrunch). In 2018 it was bought by two entrepreneurs (dot.LA). Its terms name a Los Angeles company as the operator.
- Size: it says it has more than 700,000 entrepreneurs, in more than 200 cities. That's its own figure, undated, and there's no way to check how many are active.
It's a real company that has run for well over a decade. The question is whether it's worth your time and money in 2026.
Pricing in 2026
Pricing appears only on the Premium page (CoFoundersLab Premium):
- Free: you can search, send direct messages and video chat, but all three are marked "Limited". The page doesn't say what the limits are.
- Premium: $29 a month, or $299 a year. Unlimited search and messages, plus extras: recommended candidates, who viewed your profile, weekly live events, a learning centre and partner perks.
- Trial: a 30-day free trial. The page also shows a "100% Money Back Guarantee" badge, but neither the page nor the terms explain how a refund works.
How the trial turns into a charge. The terms say that after the 30-day trial "you consent to automatic payments", and that your card "automatically will be charged at the start of each subscription period". They also say CoFoundersLab may "continue billing your payment method (e.g. credit card) even after it has expired". The only cancellation instruction is: "To avoid future charges, cancel before the renewal date" (CoFoundersLab terms). Set a reminder before day 30.
What users complain about
Numbers below were checked on 18 October 2026.
Trustpilot: 1.3 out of 5 from 105 reviews, 94% of them one-star. The profile is unclaimed and the company doesn't reply. The most common theme in recent reviews is marketing email that users say they can't unsubscribe from, followed by fake or scam profiles and problems deleting accounts (Trustpilot).
Sitejabber: 2.3 out of 5 from 39 reviews, 82% one-star. Here billing dominates: most visible reviews from 2022 to 2025 describe charges after the trial or after cancelling, cancellation requests that went unanswered, or refused refunds (Sitejabber).
Better Business Bureau: rating F, not accredited, with 21 complaints in the last three years (BBB).
Reddit has the same themes in thread titles: "Shady subscription billing by Cofunders lab, refuses to cancel trial, keeps charging my card" (r/Entrepreneur), a scam reported through a CoFoundersLab post (r/Scams), and "Is Cofounderslab selling our user data?" (r/startups).
Review sites attract unhappy customers more than happy ones, so treat the scores as a warning, not a verdict. But the themes are consistent across four different sites.
What the terms and privacy policy say
- No verification. The terms ban impersonation, but say CoFoundersLab does "not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness" of information on the site. Nothing on its pages says members are verified (terms).
- Your profile is public to members. The privacy policy says: "Your profile is fully visible to all Members and customers of our Services." Premium customers can export limited information from your profile, such as name, headline and current company, unless you opt out (privacy policy).
- Data sharing. The policy allows sharing personal data with "co-promotional partners and other business partners".
- Closing your account: the policy says profiles are hidden within 24 hours and data is "generally" deleted within 30 days.
- Support: the support form offers Account Issue, Billing Issue, Abuse Case and Feedback. There's no cancel or refund option and no stated response time (support).
Is CoFoundersLab legit?
It's a real, long-running business, not a fake website. But "legit" and "worth it" are different questions. Based on its own terms and on reviews across four sites:
- members aren't verified, so you'll need to check every profile yourself;
- the trial auto-renews into a paid plan;
- billing and cancellation are the most common complaint.
If you still sign up:
- Use a card you can easily block, or a virtual card.
- Put a reminder in your calendar for day 25 of the trial.
- Cancel from your account settings and keep a screenshot, plus a copy of any email you send.
- Opt out of profile data export in your settings.
- Check people before you spend time on them: search their name, match their LinkedIn to their profile, and keep chats on the platform until you've had a video call.
Alternatives to CoFoundersLab
Foundinity. The opposite approach to a big directory. You state your preferences, then a deeper assessment captures how you work: working style, ambition, commitment, vision and values. Its algorithm, "built on established psychological compatibility models", ranks the result, so you see compatible people instead of hundreds of random profiles.
- Every match shows where you align and where you differ.
- Every match has a 10-day clock, so conversations turn into calls instead of going quiet.
- Your profile is visible only to compatible members, not to everyone on the site.
- Free to get started; Plus is $5 a week or $15 a month, a fraction of CoFoundersLab's monthly price.
YC Co-Founder Matching. Free, with "no equity, no strings attached". Profiles need approval, which can take up to a week, and you can send 20 invites a week. It's a directory you work through yourself, and it bans hiring and selling services on the platform (YC, Startup School FAQ). Our YC Co-Founder Matching review covers what users say about it.
Communities and events. Hackathons, local founder meetups, and people you've worked with are still where many teams start. Our list of the best places to find a cofounder covers them.
