Leaving Big Tech? Where Seattle Builders Find a Cofounder in 2026 (8 Places)
A UW program that matches experienced builders with university inventions, an AI incubator at Pier 70, a startup studio, monthly founder nights, and the UW student pipeline, with dates through May 2027
TL;DR: Start with Foundinity, an online cofounder matching platform that keeps your profile private and shows you people who fit how you work, which helps if you still work at Amazon or Microsoft and aren't ready to say so. The other best places to find a cofounder in Seattle in 2026 are UW CoMotion's CASCADE program (applications due 1 November), AI House at Pier 70, Pioneer Square Labs' studio, Founder Institute Seattle, the monthly New Tech Seattle meetup (next on 10 November), Founders Live pitch nights, and, for students, UW's Buerk Center. Run one online channel and one Seattle room at the same time.

Seattle in three numbers
700. Y Combinator's cofounder directory lists Seattle with 700 active profiles, ninth among its top cities, level with Paris and behind Los Angeles (1,400) and Toronto (1,200) (YC's own figures, read 31 October 2026). So the online pool is real, but it is a fraction of the size of the biggest hubs.
More than 600. When Amazon cut 2,303 corporate jobs in Washington in October 2025, more than 600 of them were software development engineer roles, according to the state filing GeekWire reviewed (report, 29 October 2025).
110. UW's innovation office, CoMotion, counts 110 active UW spinoffs in Washington State (its own figure, July 2025). That's the base for entry 2.
What this means: Seattle's possible cofounders are mostly employed, technical and quiet about it. Some have been laid off and are deciding what's next. Your search has to reach people who aren't announcing anything.
1. Foundinity: a private search that works anywhere in the Seattle area
Many possible cofounders in Seattle still have a badge at South Lake Union or Redmond. They won't post "looking for a cofounder" on LinkedIn. Foundinity is built so they don't have to.
What it is: a cofounder matching platform for people looking for a cofounder, technical and non-technical.
How it works:
- Preferences + a deeper assessment. You state your preferences, including commitment and location. Then an assessment captures how you work: working style, ambition, commitment level, vision, values and personality, alongside skills. A multi-trait algorithm "built on established psychological compatibility models" ranks the result, so you see compatible people instead of hundreds of random profiles.
- Compatibility breakdown. Every match shows where you align and where you differ, so your first call starts on the real questions, like how many hours each of you can give while still employed.
- A 10-day clock on every match, so matches don't sit unanswered. You book intro calls right where you match.
- Private by default. Your profile isn't public; only compatible members can see it. It doesn't show up for the public or in search.
- Online. Foundinity has no Seattle office or events. It works the same from Capitol Hill, Bellevue or Redmond, and with a cofounder in Portland or Vancouver (see our guide to remote cofounders).
Cost (checked Oct 2026): free to get started: 5 likes a week, up to 3 active matches and up to 3 profile saves. Plus is $5 a week or $15 a month: 15 likes a week, unlimited active matches, everyone who liked you, the full compatibility score and breakdown, and up to 5 profile saves.
Best for: anyone in Seattle who wants to meet people who fit how they work, without telling their employer or their LinkedIn network first.
Programs that give you a team or an invention
2. UW CoMotion's CASCADE: experienced builders, matched with UW inventions
CASCADE is a new pilot at CoMotion, the University of Washington's innovation office. It looks for "experienced entrepreneurs, founders and builders with technical and/or domain expertise" to become the founder of a startup built on a UW invention.
- How it works: you rank up to three of the 18 UW innovations on offer for the 2027 cohort (medical devices, hardware, clean tech, agentic AI and health tech). You then meet the researchers behind them, and matches are made on mutual fit. The company is meant to spin out by 30 June 2027.
- Who can apply: you don't need a UW affiliation, but you must be authorised to work in the US.
- Why it helps: you don't need an idea. You start with a research team that already knows the technology, which is a founding team of a kind.
- Watch-outs:
- The deadline is Sunday, 1 November 2026 (midnight). If you read this later, watch the CASCADE page for the next cohort.
- It's a pilot, and the timeline runs from interviews in January to orientation the week of 16 February 2027.
- CoMotion asks applicants not to contact UW research teams directly outside the program.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): no fee listed.
- Best for: a senior engineer or PM who knows a sector and wants to build on proven research.
3. AI House at Pier 70: the applied-AI room
AI House, formerly the AI2 Incubator, is an applied-AI community, incubator and investor in the Pier 70 building on Alaskan Way.
- The community side: it runs Pitch Please (founders pitch and get live feedback), Founder Showcases (a day working from Pier 70 next to AI founders and engineers), Build Days, AMAs, vibe-coding sessions and female founder happy hours. It says it has held 155 events with 15,887 attendees (its own count). Desks and offices are available through Strive Workspaces.
- The incubator side: its incubator page describes a "Co-founder Matching" program that pairs deep technical people with domain experts when there's a fit, and helps them test the working relationship. It also helps recruit "co-founders and founding team members".
- Watch-outs:
- The incubator is selective, and its page doesn't say whether it takes solo founders.
- Founder roundtables are private to incubator founders, and some events are by application.
- It's an AI room. If you aren't building with AI, look elsewhere (or read our guide to finding a cofounder for an AI startup).
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): varies by event; see AI House's calendar on Luma.
- Best for: engineers and domain experts who want to build an AI company.
4. Pioneer Square Labs: the studio route
Pioneer Square Labs (PSL) is a Seattle startup studio and venture fund. Its studio tests ideas, then builds a company around the ones that pass.
- How it works: "It could be our idea. It could be your idea." Each idea is tested for customer demand, technical feasibility, business model and market. PSL's own designers, engineers, data scientists and marketers then build the validated ones before the company spins out.
- The way in: the studio page lets you sign up for its bi-weekly ideation sessions. That's the most open door here; the rest is by relationship.
- Watch-outs: the page doesn't mention entrepreneurs-in-residence or say how founders without an idea are brought in. Ask before you assume there's a seat for you.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): not stated.
- Best for: experienced operators who'd rather join a tested idea than start from a blank page.
5. Founder Institute Seattle: start alone, with structure
Founder Institute is taking applications for its Seattle Spring 2027 program: 10 sessions plus a Funding Day, with mentor feedback along the way.
- Why it's here: its page says "No Co-Founder? No Problem." You can start alone and meet other founders in the cohort.
- Watch-outs: it's a founder program, not a cofounder introduction service. The page doesn't give start dates or a deadline.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): an $899 entrance fee, fully refundable before Kickoff.
- Best for: founders who want deadlines and mentors while they look for a partner.
Rooms where Seattle founders meet every month
6. New Tech Seattle: the monthly meetup
New Tech Northwest calls itself "the Northwest's 60,000+ member community" (its own figure). Its New Tech Seattle meetup is monthly, and listed through September 2027.
- Next one: Tuesday, 10 November 2026, at The Collective, 400 Dexter Ave N. Networking from 5:30 pm, then 8-minute presentations with Q&A, then an afterparty.
- Why it helps: it repeats. Seeing the same people every month is how a coffee chat turns into a side project.
- Watch-outs: it's talks plus "block party style networking". Nobody introduces you to a cofounder; you have to say what you're looking for.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): $20 in advance, $27 at the door.
- Best for: anyone who can give one evening a month.
7. Founders Live Seattle: pitch nights
Founders Live runs pitch nights where five founders each get 99 seconds to pitch, followed by four minutes of audience Q&A, and the audience votes for the winner. Its October 2026 Seattle edition, with WTIA at the Labour Temple, was part of Seattle AI Week.
- Why it helps: a 99-second pitch tells you fast what someone is building and whether they can explain it. You can also apply to pitch at a future event and say you're looking for a cofounder.
- Watch-outs: the next in-person Seattle date isn't posted yet. Its online Pitch Video Challenge has voting from 2 November to 2 December.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): not listed on the event page.
- Best for: non-technical founders who want to be seen by engineers, and engineers scouting ideas.
For UW students
8. UW's Buerk Center: Team Tuesdays and the Dempsey Startup Competition
The Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship at UW's Foster School is where student teams form.
- Team Tuesday Lunches: a weekly lunch "open to all UW students across majors and programs". The center doesn't call it cofounder matching, but it's a regular room of students who want to build.
- Dempsey Startup Competition 2027: applications open in late February and are due on Monday, 5 April 2027; the Final Round and awards are on 27 May 2027. You need at least one student from an accredited college or university in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia or Alaska on your team. A one-person team can enter, but the rules say to add people before the Investment Round on 6 May, and "Most teams are three to five people". The 2026 judges awarded $87,500.
- Watch-outs: it's built around students. If you're a big-tech engineer, the way in is to join a student team as a non-student member.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): free for students.
- Best for: UW students, and alumni who want to join a student team.
If you still work at Amazon or Microsoft: a quiet search
Several of the Seattle threads asking where to find a cofounder are posted by people who still have a big-tech job. Some practical points:
- Keep it private until you're sure. Use channels where your profile isn't public, and say "exploring" rather than "leaving" at events.
- Read your employment agreement first. Check what it says about outside work and what you build in your own time. Don't use your employer's laptop, time or code.
- Test on a small project. Build something together over four to six weekends. You'll learn how the other person works under real limits on time.
- Be honest about hours. "Ten hours a week until June, then full time" is a useful sentence. Ask for the same from them.
- Fill the gaps between events. Several of Seattle's dated programs fall in winter and spring (CASCADE, Dempsey). An online channel like Foundinity covers the weeks in between.

FAQ
How do I find a cofounder in Seattle?
Combine one online channel with one Seattle room. Foundinity works anywhere in the area and keeps your search private; in person, go to New Tech Seattle every month, AI House events if you build with AI, or Founders Live pitch nights. If you have deep domain experience, look at UW's CASCADE program.
Where can I find a technical cofounder in Seattle?
Seattle's engineers are mostly at big tech companies, so go where they spend evenings: AI House at Pier 70, New Tech Seattle and Founders Live. Bring progress, such as customer conversations or a prototype, so an engineer can see you'll carry your half.
Are there cofounder matching events in Seattle?
Not as a regular public series. The ones that show up in search, such as a CoFoundersLab Matchup and FounderDating, are old. The closest things in 2026 are AI House's incubator program, which pairs technical people with domain experts, and CoMotion's CASCADE, which pairs experienced builders with UW inventions.
Is YC Co-Founder Matching active in Seattle?
Yes. It's free, and YC lists Seattle with 700 active profiles, ninth among its top cities. Its in-person meetups run only in San Francisco and New York.
Can I look for a cofounder while I still work at Amazon or Microsoft?
Yes, if you are careful. Read your employment agreement first, keep the work off your employer's time and equipment, and keep your search private until you're sure.
