Can Cofounders Work Remotely? How to Find One When You Don't Live in a Startup Hub (2026)

Cover for can cofounders work remotely: a house and a city skyline on opposite sides of a globe, linked by a clock

TL;DR: Yes. Start with Foundinity, a more focused tool that helps you find the right cofounder: it works from anywhere, matches you on how you work, not just skills, and puts a 10-day clock on every match so it turns into a real conversation. Many founding teams start in different cities, or different countries, and make it work. If you don't live in Bangalore, London or San Francisco, you can't rely on meetups to find a cofounder, so look online first, test people with a short project, and agree early on how you'll work apart.

Most founders don't live in a startup hub

Guides to finding a cofounder usually start with "go to local meetups". That assumes you live somewhere that has them.

Plenty of founders don't. In India, for example, 51% of the government's Startup India recognition certificates have gone to startups in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and more than 770 districts have at least one recognised startup (Startup India factbook). Google even shows the question in its "People also ask" box: "How do I find a co-founder in my locality?"

The honest answer is that your locality may not have one. But you don't need it to.

Can cofounders really work apart?

Yes, and more do every year.

But the same YC data shows a pattern worth knowing: 55% of matches were in the same country, and 61% within three time zones. People say location doesn't matter, then choose partners they can reach. Time zones matter more than distance.

Where to look when there's nothing local

Foundinity. Runs in the browser and works anywhere, so where you live doesn't limit who you meet. You state your preferences, including location, then a deeper assessment captures how you work: working style, ambition, commitment, vision and values. Its algorithm, "built on established psychological compatibility models", ranks the result, so you see compatible people instead of hundreds of random profiles.

YC Co-Founder Matching. Free and global, a directory you work through yourself. Its in-person meetups are only in San Francisco and New York, so outside those cities it's an online tool (YC).

Founder Institute. Runs virtual cofounder networking events that anyone can join (Founder Institute).

Online builder communities. Developer forums, niche Slack and Discord groups for your industry, and online hackathons. One change to know: Indie Hackers retired its partner-finding groups in 2026, so older guides that send you there are out of date.

The nearest city, occasionally. If you can reach a bigger city a few times a year, pick one recurring event there and go back. Our India guide lists programs and communities by city, and our list of the best places to find a cofounder covers the rest.

How to test someone you've never met

The risk with a remote cofounder isn't the distance. It's committing to someone you don't know.

How remote cofounders make it work

Founders who've done it describe the same habits.

Write things down. Kipwise's cofounders started the company 7,852 km apart. They say the distance forced them to set up written processes and a shared knowledge base early, which helped later (Kipwise). They'd also worked together for years first, which is why the trust was there.

Meet on a rhythm. The founders of Tuft & Needle, who lived far apart, met for three days every month or two at a city in between. At each meetup they wrote checklists for the next 30 to 60 days (Entrepreneur).

Agree on overlap hours. Pick a few hours every working day when you're both online. If you're more than about six hours apart, decide who shifts.

Decide how you'll decide. Who owns which decisions, and what happens when you disagree. This matters more when you can't settle it over coffee.

Check in often at first. Short, frequent calls early on, then fewer once you trust each other's rhythm.

When remote is a bad idea

FAQ

Can cofounders work remotely?

Yes. Many teams start in different cities or countries. It works best with overlapping hours, written processes and regular meetups.

How do I find a cofounder if there's no startup scene where I live?

Start online: matching platforms like Foundinity and YC Co-Founder Matching, virtual events, and online builder communities. Add one recurring event in the nearest city if you can.

Is it better to have a cofounder in the same city?

It's easier, not essential. YC's data shows most matches still happen within the same country and a few time zones.

How do you build trust with a remote cofounder?

A short project with a deadline, frequent video calls, written updates, and meeting in person at least once if you can.

Do investors fund remote founding teams?

Many do, but some programs are in person. YC's batch, for example, has been back in person in San Francisco since 2022. Check each program's rules.
