8 Places to Find a Cofounder in Mumbai (2026), from Powai to BKC
IIT Bombay's team-building weekend, Saturday founder meetups in Andheri, the Devcon week at BKC, and the big annual events, with dates for the rest of 2026
TL;DR: Start with Foundinity, an online cofounder matching platform that works anywhere in Mumbai and shows you people who fit how you work, so you aren't scrolling through hundreds of profiles that don't come close. The other best places to find a cofounder in Mumbai in 2026 are StartupLive Mumbai at IIT Bombay (20-21 November), where you pitch an idea or join a team for two days; IIT Bombay's E-Cell and SINE; eChai's Saturday meetups in Andheri East; the Devcon week at BKC (3-7 November, with the ETHGlobal Mumbai hackathon); TiE Mumbai and Founder Institute; Mumbai Tech Week and Global Fintech Fest; and YC's cofounder matching. Use one online channel and one in-person event at the same time.

Mumbai is not Bangalore (and why that matters for your search)
There are a lot of startups here. Maharashtra, Mumbai's state, had over 38,660 government-recognised startups on 31 March 2026, the most of any state; Karnataka, home to Bengaluru, had 22,600 (commerce ministry figures via Inc42). That's a state figure, so it includes Pune and the rest of Maharashtra.
But the online cofounder pools point to Bengaluru. YC's cofounder matching lists Bangalore as its fourth-biggest city, with 1,900 active profiles. Mumbai isn't in its top-ten list at all (YC's own figures, read 29 October 2026). India's best-known programs for forming a founding team, such as Entrepreneur First and Antler's Residency, are in Bengaluru too (see our guide to finding a cofounder in India).
And Mumbai's scene is spread across three areas. Powai has IIT Bombay. Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) has the Jio World Centre, home to Devcon, Global Fintech Fest, Mumbai Tech Week and the last TiEcon. Andheri East is where eChai meets. Pick the area you can reach easily, and go regularly.
So the plan: one online channel that covers the whole city, plus the events in your part of it.
1. Foundinity: online, works anywhere in Mumbai
A cofounder in Thane, Navi Mumbai or Bandra can be a long commute away. Foundinity reaches all of them at once, and people in Pune or Bengaluru too.
What it is: a cofounder matching platform for people looking for a cofounder, technical and non-technical.
How it works:
- Preferences + a deeper assessment. You state your preferences, then an assessment captures how you work: working style, ambition, commitment, vision and values, alongside skills. A multi-trait algorithm "built on established psychological compatibility models" ranks the result, so you see compatible people instead of hundreds of random profiles.
- Compatibility breakdown. Every match shows where you align and where you differ. That gives you the agenda for a first call.
- A 10-day clock on every match, so matches don't sit unanswered. You book intro calls right where you match.
- Private by default. Your profile isn't public; only compatible members can see it. Useful if you still work at a bank, a fintech or a media company and aren't ready to say you're leaving.
- Online. Foundinity has no Mumbai office or events; it works the same from Powai, Lower Parel or Vashi, and with a cofounder in another city (see our guide to remote cofounders).
Cost (checked Oct 2026): free to get started: 5 likes a week, up to 3 active matches and up to 3 profile saves. Plus is ₹300 a week or ₹1,000 a month ($5 or $15 outside India): 15 likes a week, unlimited active matches, everyone who liked you, the full compatibility score and breakdown, and up to 5 profile saves.
Best for: anyone in Mumbai who wants to meet people who fit how they work, between the city's events and beyond its commute.
2. StartupLive Mumbai '26 at IIT Bombay: two days to form a team
This is the closest thing Mumbai has this year to a cofounder weekend. It runs on 20-21 November 2026 at IIT Bombay in Powai, in person.
- How it works: you pick a role: "Startup, Innovator or Visitor". On day one, people pitch ideas in 90 seconds, and anyone who isn't pitching can join a team. Teams then get workshops, mentoring and time to work. On day two, each team has "3 minutes to present to a panel of investors, VCs, and corporate leaders".
- Why it helps: two days on one deadline shows you how someone works, which no profile or coffee chat can.
- Watch-outs:
- The ticket page doesn't name the organiser or show a price; a startup-events listing says it is free. Check before you book.
- Teams form around the pitched ideas. If you want to build your own idea, you have to pitch it.
- Best for: anyone who wants to test a possible cofounder on real work before talking about anything bigger.
3. IIT Bombay: E-Cell and SINE
Powai is home to IIT Bombay, and to two ways into its startup scene.
- E-Cell, IIT Bombay is the student entrepreneurship cell. Its flagship E-Summit ran for the 21st time on 11-12 December 2025, on campus. The previous edition was in February, so the timing moves; watch E-Cell's channels for the next dates.
- SINE (Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) is IIT Bombay's incubator. It says it has incubated 245 startups, 80% of which survived (its own figures, reported by Inc42 in November 2024). Its seed-fund calls this year closed in June 2026, according to a grants listing.
- Watch-outs:
- SINE incubates technology startups that already exist. It isn't a place to look for a cofounder, though its startups and events are full of people building.
- E-Summit is a large festival. Use it to meet people, then follow up one-to-one.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): E-Summit passes vary by year; SINE incubation is by application.
- Best for: non-technical founders looking for an engineer, and IIT Bombay students and alumni.
4. eChai Mumbai: Saturday meetups in Andheri East
eChai has run founder meetups "city by city, year after year, since 2009". In Mumbai, its events are on Saturdays at 11 am at DevX coworking in Andheri East.
- What's on: demo days, a product growth meetup, sessions on how founders use AI, a women founders edition and smaller dinners. The next is the eChai Startup Demo Day on 31 October 2026 at DevX Dynasty, with 107 people marked as going (eChai's own count).
- Why it helps: the same people come back. Meeting someone three times over two months tells you more than one long call.
- Watch-outs: eChai describes no cofounder matching, and its Mumbai page doesn't say what events cost.
- Best for: founders in the western suburbs who can give up a Saturday morning every few weeks.
5. The Devcon week at BKC: 3-7 November 2026
Devcon, the Ethereum Foundation's annual global conference, is in Mumbai this year, and the events around it bring technical builders to BKC for a week.
- Devcon 8 runs 3-6 November at the Jio World Centre.
- ETHIndia, organised by Devfolio, is "a one-day conference at Devcon" on 4 November. You get in with a Devcon ticket.
- ETHGlobal Mumbai is an in-person hackathon on 5-7 November. You apply to attend.
- Why it helps: a hackathon puts you on a team with strangers for a weekend, under pressure. That's a useful first test.
- Watch-outs:
- It's one week, and it's about crypto and open source. If you aren't building in that space, it's the wrong room.
- Student ticket applications close on 31 October.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): Devcon general admission from $499 (paid in ETH; $999 otherwise); community tickets from $149 for Indian residents and ecosystem contributors; student applications from $25. ETHGlobal lists no cost on its page.
- Best for: technical cofounders, especially engineers who already build in public.
6. TiE Mumbai and Founder Institute Mumbai
Two long-running founder networks. Neither introduces you to a cofounder, but both put you among people who are starting companies.
- TiE Mumbai lists five pillars: mentoring, network, education, incubating and investing. It runs programs for members and non-members, and its flagship is TiEcon Mumbai. The 2025 edition, on 12 March 2025 at the Jio World Convention Centre, expected over 3,000 participants including more than 1,000 founders (TiE's own projection). We found no date for the next one.
- Founder Institute Mumbai is taking applications for its Spring 2027 program: "10 sessions plus Funding Day" with weekly mentor feedback. It says "No Co-Founder? No Problem.", so you can start alone and meet other founders in your cohort.
- Watch-outs: TiE is better for mentors and advisors than for a cofounder, and its homepage lists no fees or dated events. Founder Institute doesn't state an application deadline.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): Founder Institute: a $299 entrance fee (teams of two or three pay 1.5 times); TiE: not stated on its homepage.
- Best for: founders who want structure and mentors while they look.
7. Mumbai Tech Week and Global Fintech Fest: the big annual events
Both run at BKC's Jio World Centre, and both are over for 2026. Put the 2027 editions in your calendar now.
- Mumbai Tech Week is organised by the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai (TEAM) with the Government of Maharashtra. The third edition ran on 29-30 May 2026, with an early-stage startup showcase and satellite events across the city from 25 to 28 May, including workshops, hackathons and meetups.
- Global Fintech Fest ran on 8-11 September 2026 at the Jio World Centre and Trident BKC. Its organisers include NPCI. If you're building in payments or lending, this is the room (more in our guide to finding a cofounder for a fintech startup).
- Watch-outs: both are large conferences. You'll meet many people briefly; the satellite events and side meetups are where conversations last longer. Neither has announced 2027 dates.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): ticketed; prices for 2027 aren't out yet.
- Best for: fintech and AI founders.
8. YC's cofounder matching: a global pool, little of it in Mumbai
Y Combinator's cofounder directory is free and open to anyone. You build a profile, search others and send invites.
- Watch-outs:
- YC's top-cities list runs from San Francisco (3,200 active profiles) to Singapore (600) and includes Bangalore (1,900), but not Mumbai.
- Its in-person cofounder meetups are only in San Francisco and New York.
- You do the searching and sorting yourself.
- Cost (checked Oct 2026): free.
- Best for: founders open to a cofounder in Bengaluru, Pune or abroad.

How to make Mumbai's events work for you
- Choose your area. Powai, BKC and Andheri East aren't close to each other. Go to the events you can reach every time, not once.
- Say what you need in the first sentence. "I'm building a payments tool for small shops and need an engineer who can give 20 hours a week" gets a better reply than "I'm looking for a cofounder".
- Build something before you talk terms. A hackathon team or a two-week project shows you more than five coffees.
- Follow up within a week. Book a proper call before you leave, or within a few days.
- Run online and in person together. Mumbai's big events come a few times a year; an online channel like Foundinity covers the weeks in between, and the rest of the city.
FAQ
How do I find a cofounder in Mumbai?
Combine one online channel with in-person events. Foundinity works anywhere in the city; for in-person, try StartupLive Mumbai at IIT Bombay (20-21 November 2026), eChai's Saturday meetups in Andheri East, or the Devcon week at BKC (3-7 November) if you build in crypto or open source.
Are there cofounder matching events in Mumbai?
Not as a regular series. The cofounder matching events that show up in search are from 2013 and 2023. The closest in 2026 is StartupLive Mumbai at IIT Bombay, where people pitch ideas and others join their teams for two days.
Is YC Co-Founder Matching available in Mumbai?
Yes. It's free and open to founders anywhere, but Mumbai isn't in its top-cities list, and its in-person meetups run only in San Francisco and New York. Bangalore is the only Indian city it lists, with 1,900 active profiles.
Is it easier to find a cofounder in Mumbai or Bangalore?
Maharashtra has more government-recognised startups than Karnataka, but the online cofounder pools and most team-forming programs are in Bengaluru. In Mumbai, expect to rely more on events, IIT Bombay and online platforms.
Where can I find a technical cofounder in Mumbai?
Start with IIT Bombay (E-Cell events, StartupLive in November) and hackathons such as ETHGlobal Mumbai. Show progress first: customer conversations or a prototype tell an engineer you'll carry your half.
